How do you hire a web developer? Hiring a web developer can be an intimidating process, but it doesn’t have to be. These simple steps will help you find the best developer out there and prevent headaches down the road. Web developers are in high demand right now, so it’s more important than ever to choose wisely so that you don’t waste your time or money.
Finding a web developer can be overwhelming
You don’t want to break your budget, but you also need someone who can get your idea up and running. If you know what skills you’re looking for, you’ll be able to better define your needs when speaking with candidates. To help, we asked experts from Thrive Themes, an agency that specializes in custom themes for WordPress clients. Here are their five tips on how to hire a web developer that works well with WordPress.
Define Your Needs
Before hiring any web developer, it’s important that you define what your specific needs are. This will allow you to find and hire an appropriate candidate for your project. Some qualities that are key in finding a qualified web developer include expertise, experience, portfolio and references. Make sure that you thoroughly vet all potential candidates before you hire them—because once they’re on board, it’s very difficult if not impossible to fire them.
Set Up an Effective Search
If you’re trying to hire a web developer, it’s important that you get your money’s worth out of them. Don’t cut corners by hiring on price alone—you might end up with someone who won’t stick around for long and take business away from you. The best way to find an effective web developer is by setting up an effective search. Using LinkedIn and Stack Overflow are great ways to network with potential hires and set up your first phone call. Once you’ve found an ideal candidate, it’s time for…
Keep Budget in Mind
When hiring for web development services, it’s important to remember that what you’re looking for is not only skill but also budget. Many web developers may have all of your technical needs covered, but ask yourself if they are offering everything you need. It might be less expensive in the long run if you hire someone who doesn’t provide extra services because they can focus on what they do best.
Write Down the Qualities You Want
A good way to find and hire a web developer is by writing down all of your expectations for a website. This can help you focus on what exactly you need before you begin your search. Although there are many qualities that might come into play, such as location or preferred method of communication, there are three key points that should be considered when choosing an individual to create your website. These include experience, price and availability.
Read Their Websites Carefully
For example, before you contact anyone, spend some time carefully reading their websites. See if they are active on social media. Look at their portfolio and see if they have built sites similar to what you want them to build for you. Also, check out their reputation and read reviews left by previous clients. Finally, ask around in your network of business contacts and see if anyone has worked with them in the past or can offer any insight into how well they do their job.
Do They Have Previous Experience?
Look for web developers who have an established portfolio, as they should be able to produce quality work. Don’t hire someone without previous experience. Anyone can say they know how to develop a website, but look for proof. Plus, anyone can learn how to use software with time; if you want more assurance that your site will get done right, you need someone who has proof of success in their field.
Are They Responsive?
This is one of my favorite tips for hiring Indian web developers. If you’re not familiar with Slack, it’s a messaging system built for teams and companies. Many dev teams have set up Slack accounts with their business name, so if you reach out to them on that channel, they will quickly be able to identify who you are and what company you work for. The first thing I do when reaching out to any potential developer (before talking about price or deadlines) is message them in Slack first. It’s quick and easy way to figure out how responsive they will be throughout the process. Pro tip: Since most professional developer freelancers are very responsive in their communication habits, many recruiters don’t even bother with slack anymore! After all, there’s no easier way to get an immediate sense of how well someone communicates than by engaging with them directly in real time without any intermediaries involved!
Ask for Referrals and Testimonials
A web developer’s portfolio and reputation are key factors when choosing an SEO company. To get first-hand information about a developer’s previous work, look for testimonials and references from former clients. If you find these, follow up with these people—you can learn quite a bit from their experiences working with your potential web developer. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for referrals directly from developers you’re considering; everyone loves receiving (and giving) recommendations.
Be Clear About your Requirements from Them
Before you even think about making any calls or sending out those CVs, you should have a clear picture of what exactly it is that you want your web developer to do for you. Just like hiring anyone else, if you’re unclear on what your web developer will do for you, then it’s likely that they won’t be as effective in carrying out their role. So before putting pen to paper and starting to look at potential candidates, make sure you know exactly what skills and talents you’ll need from them. For example, having a full-time job might mean that you can only hire someone part-time who doesn’t mind working flexibly around your schedule. Whatever it is though, write down all of your requirements clearly so that when you start reviewing developers for the position later on, there won’t be any doubt over whether they meet all (or most) of them.
The Wish List: Another way to prepare before contacting web developers is by creating a wish list of things you wouldn’t mind seeing included in their portfolio or resume.
Finally, Review Their Skills and Rates Before Appointing Them.
Since you’re looking for an expert with knowledge in web development, you must be ready to pay them accordingly. Once you’ve done a thorough review of their past work, check out their rates and decide if it matches your budget. Make sure that they can meet all of your requirements before proceeding further so you can rest assured that they’ll handle all concerns with ease. Keep in mind that freelancers come from different countries around the world; If not, don’t worry! Freelancers are fluent in multiple languages, including English as well as other language such as Spanish and French. All international freelancers have skills that extend beyond translation!
