So, What is Uroflowmetry?

It is a diagnostic procedure used to measure the rate and flow of your urine to detect problems. The test is straightforward in nature and a non-invasive procedure, which denotes that your skin doesn’t need to be pierced. Physicians use this test to learn about your urine flow rate, sphincter function, prostate problems, any possible urinary irregularities, and bladder issues.

This urine test at home is called known a uroflow test.

Why is a Uroflowmetry Test Performed?

Doctors may recommend you a uroflowmetry test if you have urinary obstruction, slow urination, difficulty in urinating, or other similar problems. Test results can also be used to find out how your sphincter and bladder muscles are working. The muscles of the sphincter close the bladder’s opening, thus preventing urine leakage.

The Uroflowmetry test at home can also help your doctor detect any obstructions to your urine flow and the amount of urine flow. An enlarged prostate can cause blockage.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have a chronic urinary tract infection or urinary leakage.

What Conditions Can be Diagnosed Using a Uroflowmetry Test?

This test generally helps in determining if there is an obstruction to the normal flow of urine. Few medical conditions that can affect the flow of urine include:

  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy is a condition in which the prostate in a person becomes so enlarged that it blocks the urethra, thereby making it difficult for urine to pass through.
  • Neurogenic bladder dysfunction is a condition in which a person may have bladder issues that have occurred due to an injury to the nervous system, such as a tumor in the spinal cord.

How Do You Prepare for a Uroflowmetry Test at Home or at a Diagnostic Center?

For a uroflow test, you go to the physician’s clinic or laboratory with a full bladder. You will be asked to urinate in a funnel-shaped device, or you may be instructed to pee in a special toilet used in the test.

When urinating, do not try to change the flow or speed of urine. The funnel will be equipped with electronic uroflowmetry, which measures the amount and speed of your urine. This uroflowmetry shows the time when your bladder is completely empty.

If you move or strain while urinating, the uroflowmetry result may not be accurate.

If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, tell your doctor in advance. Also, tell your doctor about any medicines, vitamins, supplements, or herbs you are taking.

This can be possible at home now. Experts from Star Home Care Diagnostic Center will come to your place with all necessary equipment and collect samples

after Uroflowmetry at home, and provide you the results within 48 hours of the collection.

How Accurate are Uroflowmetry Test Results?

Uroflowmetry test results were reliable in 58 (78.4%) subjects falling under the pre-hydrated group and were reliable in 30 (40.5%) subjects falling under the non-pre-hydrated group.

What is the Uroflow Test Process?

Unlike traditional methods followed during the urine tests, where you had to urinate into a cup, here in the modern method, you must urinate into a funnel-shaped device or special toilet for the uroflow test. It is important that you do not place any toilet tissue on or in the toilet or the device.

It is best to urinate as usual without trying to manipulate speed or flow in any way. An electronic uroflowmeter connected to a funnel or toilet measures the speed and volume of urination. You should not urinate until the machine is switched on. The uroflowmeter calculates the amount of urine you excrete, the flow rate in milliliters per second, and the time required to completely empty the bladder.

It records this information in the form of a diagram. During normal urination, your initial urine flow begins to slow down, accelerate, and eventually slow down again. The uroflowmeter can detect any deviations from the standard to help the doctor make an appropriate diagnosis.

When you have finished urinating, the device will report your results. Your doctor will then discuss the findings with you. Depending on your specific case, you will need to perform a urine test for several consecutive days.

Like ways when you go for a urine test at home, lab experts will carry the necessary equipment to get your tests done.

Understanding the End Results of Your Uroflowmetry Test:

Your physician in charge will use the test results to determine your maximum flow rate or Qmax. Doctors usually use maximum flow, along with your discharge pattern and urine volume, to determine the severity of any obstruction or blockage.

Decreased urine flow may indicate that you have weak bladder muscles or a blockage in the urethra.

Increased urine flow may indicate that you have muscle weakness, which helps to prevent urine flow. It can also be a symptom of urinary incontinence. After the urine flow test, your doctor will consider your individual situation and symptoms before you can create a treatment plan.

You may need more urinary system tests followed. You should discuss the results of your test with your doctor. They can help you determine if treatment is needed and what your options are when you need treatment.

If you have urinary problems, talk to your doctor. This may be a sign of a more serious medical condition.

At Star Home Care Diagnostic centers, you can get the opportunity to talk to experts that can help you clear any doubts regarding a uroflowmetry test at home process.

Why Do You Need a Uroflow Test?

It is a very useful diagnostic test that helps assess how well your urinary tracts function. Your doctor may suggest a uroflowmetry test if you have facing troubles in urinating or have a persistent slow stream. A uroflow test can detect an obstruction in your urinary tract, such as an enlarged prostate, by measuring the average and top rates of urine flow.

Also, Know What Causes Slow Urine Flow in Males?

The most common cause of urinary hesitancy in aged men is an enlarged prostate. Almost every older man has some trouble with dribbling, a weak urine stream, and starting urination. Another common factor is an infection of the prostate or urinary tract.

Conclusion

If you are facing issues with peeing or having trouble peeing, visit the nearest doctor at the earliest. If they recommend you a uroflowmetry test at home, don’t hesitate to book your appointment and get the test done.
