Tips to save money when you fly with spirit airlines
Spirit Airlines is a low-cost carrier in America. It offers regular flights from Florida, Chicago, Minneapolis, New Jersey, Fort Lauderdale, Washington DC, Baltimore and New York City to many Spirit Airlines Destinations in Florida, Las Vegas and Puerto Rico. Many people fly with spirit airlines for cheaper rates compared to other leading airlines. But there are certain tips that could help you save more on your trip. We suggest you check out our Spirit baggage policy if you are planning for a future flight with Spirit Airlines. If traveling with only a carry-on bag or personal item? What should I do?
Do I need to check in my bag?
Most airlines are charging passengers a fee to check in Spirit their luggage. With Spirit Airlines, you won’t be charge for your Spirit bag Policy if you carry them on inset of checking them in. This is important because many of us don’t want to pay fees for our Spirit Airline baggage. But at the same time we want our items with us on vacation or when going out of town. If you plan ahead and organize accordingly, you can still have your things with you without having to pay an extra fee. The less fees you have, the more money stays in your pocket. And that means more saving for another trip!
How much should I pay for a carry on?
Spirit Airlines offers three sizes of carry-on bags, depending on how much space you need. If you’re flying Spirit Airlines domestically within Florida or are only taking one international flight with Spirit, you can choose from a carry-on sized at 22x14x9 inches (black) or 28x18x10 inches (silver). For flights outside of Florida, opt for a carry-on sized at 22x14x12 inches (black) or 28x18x10 inches (silver). Like their Spirit checked baggage policy, Spirit’s carry-on fees vary depending on where your flight is going. Although unlike checked bag fees, fees for both domestic and international carry-ons are $30 each way.
What about my personal items?
Spirit Airlines does not charge for bags checked at Spirit check-in. However, keep in mind that you are only allowed one personal item that must fit under your seat, so if you have more than one bag to bring onboard, be sure you keep it small. Additionally, Spirit does allow passengers one free carry-on bag as well as a personal item. Keep your carry-on light enough that it can fit underneath your seat, but also heavy enough that it will not blow away. If an employee deems your bag too large or heavy, they may request a fee before allowing it on board.
Is there an item limit?
There is no limit for carry-on items, but Spirit does have a weight limit of 50 pounds. However, it’s not uncommon for Spirit agents to weigh heavier bags than that. If you have multiple suitcases with you, you will be required to pay an overweight bag fee. If your bag is between 51-70 pounds, there is a $25 fee per Spirit checked bag. For every additional 5 pounds over 70 pounds of weight in your checked bags, Spirit charges $100 per checked bag for up to three more bags (meaning if your total extra weight exceeds 85 pounds, your Spirit Airlines baggage fees are capped at $300).
How do I make sure I don’t lose stuff in the overhead bin?
First, when you’re purchasing your Spirit Airline Tickets, be sure you purchase a seat on a non-stop flight. The last thing you want is for your luggage to end up on a different Spirit Airlines plane. If your schedule allows, also choose an early morning flight or later in the evening. The early flights tend to have fewer passengers so there is less of a chance that someone will snag your overhead bin space before you can grab it. (Think about it—if you fly at 8 am, there are probably more seats available than if you flew at 8 pm). You can also save yourself some headache by planning ahead by researching where all of Spirit’s most popular destinations are located.
Can I check bags at the gate instead of online?
If you show up at Spirit Airlines with no bags, they can’t force you to buy one. However, they do put a hold on your card for $100 in case you decide that packing light isn’t for you and decide to purchase luggage at their airport store later. Your bags will be delivered when possible or shipped through UPS within three days—just make sure you can track it! After 24 hours, your card will be charged $25 per day, per bag (plus taxes). If they are still unable to locate your bags after 60 days (or sooner if requested), you can request a full refund.
What happens if I show up without my luggage?
If your Spirit flight is delayed or cancelled, you can get a refund for your baggage charges. As long as you’re scheduled for an arrival flight within 24 hours of your original departure, Spirit will provide a one-way discount fare equal to that of your Spirit Airlines baggage fee. So if you paid $25 for a carry-on bag, Spirit will give you back $25 in return. Get out of line quicker with their Spirit check-in: You can avoid long lines at Spirit Check Flight by checking in on their Spirit Airlines website before going through security. You’ll need to do it 24 hours before departure but there is no charge or special requirements beyond Internet access.
What if my flight is delay or cancelled and I have no way to get home?
There’s nothing worse than having a Spirit flight cancelled or delayed, especially if you have no way of getting home. Spirit Airlines offers several different options for travellers who find themselves in that situation. First, they offer 24-hour extended delay protection on select flights to certain major cities in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Mexico and Puerto Rico. If your flight is delayed overnight or longer because of a covered reason such as weather or mechanical issues, then you can get your flight cost refunded (minus any cancellation fees) when you rebook with them within 60 days. This extends only to specific countries so be sure to check before assuming that it will work for where you are going.
