It can be easy to get caught up in the design of bespoke sofas without taking into account comfort. It is helpful to visualize how you want to use your new furniture. If your vision includes long, comfortable lounge sessions, movie night hosting or settling into a midday snooze, then there are some things to think about. This has been our business for quite some time (15+ years). We’ve done all the research and put it together for you. Continue reading, friends.
Here are five tips to help you choose the comfiest couch or sectional that is right for you.
Rule 1 – Start with the right depth of your sofa for
The first step in finding the right seat depth is to think about how you sit. Are you more comfortable sitting on your back or on your feet?
Sitting upright is a good choice. A seat that supports your thighs and keeps your knees bent at 90 degrees will be a good fit. It also allows your feet to touch the ground. A seat depth of 21″-22″ is ideal for someone between 5’4″ and 5’10. This will give you plenty of space between your legs and the seat’s front edge. A seat depth of 23″-25″ is ideal for taller people. For smaller people, a depth of 20″ might be a good choice. You may prefer to curl up than sit straight. A deep sofa is a great option. Start by increasing the dimensions of your sofa by a few inches. If you want to add accent pillows, you can go deeper to provide extra support. To give you more space, you may consider a sectional sofa over a sofa depending on your needs.
Rule 2: Be mindful of the height and filling of your sofa’s seat.
If the sofa’s seat height is off, taller people can feel like they are squatting rather than sitting. Those on the shorter side may find their legs hanging above the ground. The general rule of thumb is that the deeper the seat depth, then the higher the seat height must be. Modern comfortable couches have a wide range of seat heights. The average range is between 17 and 18 inches. These foams are well-known for their durability and comfort. Medley uses materials that are good for you as well as the planet. This includes both certified poly foam and GOALS certified organic Dunlop latex. For a more relaxed look, wool and down fillings are popular. Consider that you may sink slightly if you use a down cushion as your seat cushion. The down filling can shift, which is completely normal! To maintain their shape, the cushions should be fluffed occasionally. Make sure your sofa cushions have baffling. This helps to control the movement of the down filling and keeps it in place. A sofa with a tight back and firm cushion would be a great choice if you require extra support for your back or prefer to sit up. If you plan to use your sofa for reclining or naps, looser back cushions may be more appealing.
Rule 3 – Focus on length so you can lounge as you like
A 3-seat sofa is better if you are planning to lounge on it regularly. The average length of a 3-seat sofa is approximately 7 feet (or 84 inches). However, you can stretch it out further and get shorter depending on your height.
Rule 4 – Consider the back height when deciding on the style
Your height will determine the ideal height of your sofa’s back. Consider whether you would like a headrest if you intend to place a television in front of your sofa. The average back height for the most comfortable couch is between 26″ and 32″. Taller people will find a higher back to be more supportive. The back height of your sofa will also impact how comfortable it feels in your room. Consider how a sofa with a high back and a standard 8-foot ceiling might look in your space compared to a piece with a lower profile. It all depends on what you like and how much space is available.
Rule 5: To recline, or not to recline Take into account the angle of your back
If you primarily use your sofa to recline, then pitch sofas, also known as sofas with slightly angled backs, are great. This type of couch can be sat straight on, but a sofa with straight backs is better for those with back problems or who prefer a more vertical position. Take a look at yourself!
