What Is The IELTS Writing Section?
Before I get into my tips, it’s worth taking the time to understand everything that the IELTS writing section has to offer.
First, there are two types of IELTS writing: IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic. Check with the institution you are applying to to see which version you need. No matter what type of task you perform, you will need to perform two writing tasks.
IELTS Function
write a letter for general IELTS study; for Academic IELTS you will select, compare and summarize information from a graph, table, chart or chart.
The Second Task of IELTS
for both types of tests you will write an essay, although the general IELTS study uses common themes.
IELTS writing section
There are majorly two tasks in the IELTS writing task:
- Task 1 requires you to write 150 words that describe a chart or set of data;
- The task of 2 discourse essays consists of 250 words.
You have to complete both tasks in an hour and you will be given a score of 0-9 on these four qualities: Achievement in tasks, coordination and coherence, grammar and vocabulary.
Each of these IELTS practice questions comes with the answer to the Band 8 or 9 model and my explanation of how it gets to this point. Time to start!
IELTS Writing Task Practice
In the IELTS Writing exam, you must write your answers on a piece of paper by hand. It is a good idea to do this several times before taking the actual exam. My practice sheet on the official IELTS Writing answer sheet contains two spaced lines for easier editing and correction, as well as space for teacher feedback at the end.
The best tips to improve your IELTS written scores
Now that you are familiar with the intricacies of the writing section, let’s get into my best tips for the best performance on test day.
- Use your time wisely
You have only half to complete the whole part. The second task will help you score more, so I recommend spending no more than 20 minutes for the first task and 40 minutes for the second task. Take the time to plan and check what you have written. As a result, it is a good idea to get used to setting a time limit of 60 minutes when conducting experimental tests.
- Check the number of words
You must write at least 150 words for the first task and 250 words for the second task. So, everything is less and you lose characters.
- Recognize the task
Read the instructions carefully and note or emphasize the key words. Also, know what questions you need and what information to include.
- Group your ideas logically
Spend up to five minutes combining ideas and choosing what information you want to include. As a result, organize your ideas logically and include connecting words and conjunctions between paragraphs, sentences, and phrases.
- Know your movement towards yourself
Each task requires a specific approach.
Written Task 1 (academic)
identify key trends and characteristics; rewrite the information from the assignment in the introduction using synonyms and grammatical conversions; organize your main paragraphs logically; don’t describe every piece of information – just what fits the question; summarize the main trends from your body paragraphs in conclusion.
Writing Task 1 (General Training)
analyzes the question; attack using arrowheads on ideas; planning paragraphs, pointing to the points of your arrows; write a letter.
Writing Task 2
an introduction, containing at least two main paragraphs and a conclusion; repeat the question in the introduction and make a statement based on your opinion; Write topic sentences that express your main ideas – one topic sentence for one idea – and use one topic sentence to start each body paragraph; in the rest of the paragraph, use examples to illustrate the point; Summarize your comments.
- Think about makeup
Each type of task requires an appropriate style (formal, semi-formal, or informal) that determines your choice of grammatical structures and lexical resources.
- Test your work!
Always do a thorough check when you have completed each task. This will help you ask the following questions.
- Have you checked grammar and spelling?
- Did you cover everything required in the assignment?
- Did you organize the information into paragraphs?
- Have you written a topic sentence for each paragraph?
- Did you summarize your main points in your conclusion?
- Also, Did you repeat the assignment in the introduction?
- Did you use conjunctions and discourse symbols?
- Have you checked for duplicates?
- Have you used any complex sentences?
- Work within your grammar framework and vocabulary
On the day before the test, take time to read a variety of resources, such as advertisements, articles, manuals, journals, reports, and sample examples from experimental tests to learn new words in context. As a result, review the grammatical structures that correspond to levels C1 and C2 of the general European reference framework for languages.
- Learn from your mistakes
Start a study journal to record errors from your writing. Also, learn from these mistakes by correcting them, perhaps working with friends or colleagues who are preparing for IELTS. In this way, you can turn your weaknesses into strengths.
