While moving your house, there are some basic rules that you need to abide by. You have to start by deciding the date and budget for your move. Then you have to decide how you would like to move; by yourself or through packers and movers? You have to start with the necessary preparations right after your plan. Irrespective of the fact that you are moving through the packers and movers or by yourself, there are some things that you have to move on your own. Jewellery comes under this section of goods that you will have to pack and move single-handed. This article will help you in understanding how to move your jewellery during house shifting.
So, in the subsequent pointers, I have explained how to move your jewellery while house shifting with packers and movers:
Prepare for the process
Preparation is the key to successful house shifting. As shifting your house entails a lot of tasks that need to be completed before the day of the move, there is a high chance that you forget to pack the valuables. Even if you have hired the best packers and movers in your proximity, they won’t be shifting some of your belongings. Here we are talking about an important part of house shifting which is shifting your jewellery. As you shift your jewellery, you have to be very responsible and you have to make sure that each of the pieces is packed in a certain way.
-
Categorise the pieces of jewellery
The first thing that you need to do while moving your jewellery is to categorise them. We being Indians have a huge collection of ornaments and they are of several materials. They are made of gold, silver, diamond, semi-precious stone, German silver, brass, copper, etc. But mainly you can segregate them into three categories like precious, semi-precious, and costume jewellery. Now, you need to spread a cloth or a table-runner on a flat surface like your bed, table, work desk, etc. and outspread your pieces of jewellery on it. Make separate segments for the earrings, bangles, neckpieces, bracelets, and rings.
-
Create an inventory
After you have categorised the pieces of jewellery on the sheet of cloth or table-runner, you should create an inventory of them. Take a pen and paper and make a note of all the numbers of chains, chokers, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, bangles, and rings. Also mention the semi-precious and costume jewellery in your list.

Get the packing supplies
Packing supplies for your house shifting is quite different from packing supplies for the shifting of your jewellery. Here you do not need huge sturdy packing boxes. You will rather need some regular, some odd, and yet functional supplies to pack your jewellery in the right way. Some of the required jewellery packing supplies are drinking straws, tissue paper rolls, bubble wrap, stretch wrap, cardboard, packing paper, Ziploc pouches, pill box, specs cases, packing tapes, and rubber bands.
Packing your jewellery in a jewellery box
While packing your jewellery, you have to be careful that all the pieces are intact after the move. You are very blessed if you have a dedicated jewellery box. The jewellery boxes are made up of metal, melamine, or wood. The inside of the jewellery box is made of soft foam lined with suede or velvet. It provides cushioning to your jewellery and protects them from denting and breaking.
The box has separate compartments for the different types of jewellery. You can store the earrings in one compartment, the rings in a compartment, the bangles in a bangle rod, and the neckpieces in a separate compartment. However, while packing the heavier pieces of necklaces and earrings, you should pack them each in a separate packing paper, secure them with packing tapes and then keep them in the given compartments. After you have packed all the jewellery in their respective compartments, you should fill the gaps in the box using bits of packing paper or tissues.
Packing your jewellery without a packing box
Many of us do not have a dedicated jewellery box and many of us have jewellery that is not going to fit inside the restricted capacity of a jewellery box. Therefore, we cannot depend upon a jewellery box to move our jewellery. The best way to move your jewellery is by packing them according to their build.

Earrings
Earrings are mainly of two types: studs and danglers. Studs are button-like structures with a stick at the back available in small or big sizes. Danglers are earrings that hang below the earlobe and swing side to side and are available in all sizes. For packing the stud earrings, you should use pieces of cardboard. Puncture them in two places using a needle or safety pin. Insert the pointed end of the studs and secure the other end using stoppers. Pack these sets of studs in bubble wrap and keep them in a box. You can also use the Ziploc pouches to keep a pair of studs in each. Another way of packing studs is in a pill box or specs box made of plastic.
For packing the danglers, you have to be a bit more careful. You have to pack each danger separately using packing paper and then keep the pair together by wrapping the entire set in a piece of bubble wrap. Keep several dangers together in a separate box.

Neckpieces
Use the thick drinking straws to pack chains and dainty neckpieces. Pass the chains through the straws and hook them up. This will prevent the chains from getting tangled. For packing heavier neckpieces, the same technique will work but this time using the tissue-paper rolls. Now bring the bejewelled straws and tissue rolls together and wrap them with packing papers and lastly wrap them using bubble wraps. Keep them in a small packing box in which you will be carrying all the pieces of jewellery.
-
Bangles
If you have a “Pringles” box or a spare plastic jar, you can use it to pack the bangles. You can also tie them up using a cord and pack them inside sturdy little cardboard boxes.
-
Bracelets and anklets
You should pack the bracelets and anklets using the same technique that you used for packing the neckpieces. Use the straws and tissue paper rolls and then pack them inside the packing box.
-
Rings and toe-rings
Use the pillboxes or the Ziploc pouches to pack the rings and toe rings.

Nose pins
Nose pins are small pieces of jewellery and are often made of diamonds. Make sure that you don’t lose them. Use a separate Ziploc pouch for the nose pins or you can use a small plastic box to store them during your house shifting.
