Mobile Hotspot
A mobile hotspot is the best way to ensure you always have internet access on your laptop.
There is an upfront cost to do this. You will need to purchase a hotspot device as well as a mobile internet plan. Many companies offer mobile hotspots.
We recommend three models of mobile hotspots:
Verizon Jetpack MiFi 8800L
The Verizon Jetpack MiFi8800L 4G hotspot is still in top form despite being quite old. It supports 11 LTE bands and uses the Qualcomm X20 modem. It supports both 5GHz and 2.4GHz mobile networks. You can connect up to 15 devices simultaneously to the network.
Only Verizon is authorized to sell the device. The device is available for $99 when you sign up for a 2-year mobile internet contract. If you purchase the device without a contract, it will cost $199.
HTC 5G Hub
HTC 5G Hub is the most popular 5G mobile hotspot.
It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, a Snapdragon X50 modem, 4GB RAM, Bluetooth, Ethernet connectivity, and support for up to 20 devices. It runs Android.
Unfortunately, 5G is not yet available everywhere. The HTC 5G Hub may not be the right choice for you if you are looking for a hotspot that will work even when you’re far from the main road.
GlocalMe DuoTurbo
You will need to have temporary Wi-Fi when you travel outside the United States. A mobile hotspot is required as well as an internet plan that works internationally.
GlocalMe DuoTurbo is our favorite. It is available in over 140 countries and covers more than 270+ operators. Data rates start at $9 per day. There are also options for renting devices.

Connect your Smartphone or Tablet to the Internet
Tethering your smartphone to your computer is the best and fastest way to access the internet if you don’t use mobile data often.
Two drawbacks to tethering your smartphone/tablet are:
- Your mobile phone’s signal is all that matters. This is fine if your mobile phone signal is strong in a city, but it’s less reliable when you’re far away.
- Laptops use more data than smartphones, so you might be surprised when your next phone bill arrives in your mailbox.
You can enable tethering on Android devices by going to Settings > Internet > Hotspots and Tethering. The toggle next to Wi-Fi Hotspot will be moved to the On location.
iOS users will need to navigate to Settings > Personal hotspot to slide the toggle.
You should create a new username on both iOS and Android to secure your hotspot.
Locate Public Wi-Fi
Depending on your location, you may be able to jump on a nearby Wi-Fi network. You can often join networks at libraries, coffee shops, and restaurants, as well as transport hubs.
Apps like Wi-Fi Master Key for Android or Wi-Fi Finder for iOS can help you locate free Wi-Fi in your area.
Take care to protect your privacy and security when you join public Wi-Fi networks. You can read our How to spot fake public Wi-Fi networks run by hackers article to find out more.
Wi-Fi USB Dongle and Get Wi-Fi
An “internet stick” or Wi-Fi USB dongle is a more affordable and accessible option to a temporary Wi-Fi hotspot. You don’t have to commit to a long-term, expensive mobile internet plan. Instead, you can insert a standard SIM card (3G/4G) and connect to it.
These internet sticks are smaller and lighter than mobile hotspots, so they are more suitable for those who travel frequently and need a reliable internet connection. However, you shouldn’t expect the signal strength, Wi-Fi speed, or range to be as strong as a hotspot device.
For more information, see our article on the best Wi-Fi USB adaptors.
There is a possibility that another person in your group might have an internet connection. You might have login credentials to a private network nearby, but they do not.
You can also share bandwidth with macOS or Windows machines in these cases.
Go to Settings > Internet and Mobile Hotspot to share an internet connection with a Windows machine. Select the connection that you wish to share, and then slide the toggle into the On position.
To share an internet connection using a macOS device:
- Visit Apple >System Preferences > Sharing >Internet Sharing.
- Select the connection that you wish to share from the drop-down menu.
- Select the method you would like to share the internet using the list of options below.
Understanding Your Situation before deciding on an option
The best way to access Wi-Fi with an internet connection is dependent on where you live and how you plan to use it.
A fully-fledged mobile hotspot is a good option for people who work a lot on the move. For casual users, you might consider buying an internet stick or tethering. Wireless internet is available in rural areas.
