Working in fashion for over 20 years, many people ask me for my tips on what they should be wearing and how to go about wearing it, what trends they should take advantage of and what’s woefully out of fashion.
As someone who is a fan of style for its own self-expression, for its ability to communicate with its wearer and let the world know how the person feels I’m not able to instruct anyone how they should wear their clothes or enforce any rules. As far as I am worried, wearing what you feel like – and the way you feel you – is the only basic.
But, there are a few tips, tricks and hacks that I have discovered over time. From that necklace which elevates basics to the benefits of regular clean-outs and changing rooms principles (‘thou must not make impulse purchases’), they help me with buying something or making an outfit when I wake up, whether I’m working from home or getting ready to reemerge to a new and brighter world following lockdown.
1) Keep Simple
Learn from the greatest – from Sade up to Coco Chanel. According to Mademoiselle Chanel once said: ‘Before you leave the home, glance in the mirror and take off one thing.’ A “base” of items helps. Also buy Sweatshirt for kids.
Everyone will have their own idea of what this means, but a white shirt with a great cashmere sweater (try COS) and a well-cut trench make an excellent investment. I can wear them repeatedly.
2) Fit Is Everything
Do you know that woman who is always dressed to impress? It’s easy to see that her clothes look good on her. Contrast that with clothes that aren’t fitting like a loose hemline or an over-tight polo-neck, for instance – could impact on a first impression.
Taking the time to pay particular attention to how your clothes fit is a surefire way to improve the look of your. Be sure to:
- The seam of a shirt touches your shoulder
- A skirt zips up neatly
- A shoe meets the back of your heel.
It’s subtle, but these small items make a big difference. A great tailor is your best friend in this situation. I often buy items and modify them at Rosario Tailoring in Savile Row.
3.) Find a Graphic T-Shirt, That Expresses How You Feel
Graphic T-shirts can be the ultimate sartorial style – regardless of whether you’re sharing your music taste (a Beychella T-shirt) or recent boxsets (a “La” T-shirt designed by Philip Normal).
Try organic cotton whenever you can to ensure that your clothes are lasting and durable. If you’re not a pro at this type of dress, don’t think graphic T-shirts should be worn with sneakers and a plaid shirt. The models like Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski enhance their outfits by wearing high-waisted trousers and ankle boots.
