A representative from internet performance monitoring company Alert Site said that this morning there were brief periods when the website was inaccessible in the cities of Los Angeles, Seattle, and Dallas. He reasoned that people wanting to find the nearest Denny’s restaurant were the likely source of the website’s traffic surge.

This theory seems to be supported by Google Trends, which analyzes search volume. In this morning’s top 40 searches, five of them are about Denny’s. The ninth entry is “Denny’s Places.” The eatery is also the #1 trending subject on Twitter this morning. Amidst the hundreds of ‘free breakfast’ tweets, users have been tweeting about the server outage at Denny’s.
Search volume data from Google Trends appears to back up the theory. This morning, Denny’s-related queries make up 5% of the top 40. As for No. 9, it’s “denny’s places.”
Both the restaurant’s namesake (Denny’s) and one of its dishes (Grand Slam) are now among Twitter’s top ten trending topics this morning. Customers have been tweeting about the server issues at Denny in between the hundreds of ‘free breakfast’ posts.
