Google celebrated the life and legacy of Dr Ildaura Murillo-Rohde with a Google Doodle on her birth anniversary on September 6, 2021. Celebrating Dr. ildaura Murillo-Rohde was a trailblazer in the healthcare field and is best known for founding the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) in 1975. She was a dedicated nurse, educator, tennis instructor, and organizational administrator who significantly contributed to the healthcare profession, particularly the Hispanic community.

Early Life and Education

Celebrating Dr. ildaura Murillo-Rohde was born in Panama City, Panama, on September 6, 1920. Her parents were both of Spanish descent and instilled in her a strong work ethic and the importance of education. She attended the University of Panama and earned a degree in nursing in 1943.

Career in Nursing

After graduation, Dr Murillo-Rohde began her career as a nurse in Panama. She then moved to the United States in 1947 to pursue further education in nursing. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from New York University and a Master of Science in Nursing Education from Columbia University.

Dr Murillo-Rohde worked as a nurse educator at several institutions, including the City College of New York, the University of California, and the University of Puerto Rico. She also worked as a tennis instructor and coached the Puerto Rican tennis team in the 1960s.

Founding of NAHN

In 1975, Dr Murillo-Rohde founded the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) in response to the lack of representation and opportunities for Hispanic nurses in the United States. NAHN’s mission is to promote Hispanic nurses’ professional development and advocate for the healthcare needs of Hispanic communities. The organization has grown to one of the country’s most significant associations of Hispanic healthcare professionals, with over 5,000 members.

Dr Murillo-Rohde was a tireless advocate for Hispanic nurses and worked to increase the visibility of Hispanic nurses in the healthcare industry. She also served as the editor of the NAHN newsletter, El Boletin, which provided information on the latest developments in nursing education and healthcare policy.

Legacy and Recognition

Dr Murillo-Rohde’s contributions to the nursing profession and Hispanic communities have been recognized through numerous awards and honours. In 2004, she was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame. She also received the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Health Award and the National Association of Hispanic Nurses’ Lifetime Achievement Award, among others.

Dr. Murillo-Rohde Death

Dr Murillo-Rohde passed away on September 5, 2010, just one day before her 90th birthday. Her legacy inspires Hispanic nurses and healthcare professionals to advocate for equitable healthcare for all communities.
