At its “Far Out” presentation on September 7, 2022, Apple introduced the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Without the larger 6.7-inch variant, these gadgets could be confused for their forerunners.
Apple has updated and improved these foundational models despite minimal external changes.
Customers have a clear throughline for features and costs from top to bottom, even though the iPhone 14 Pro lineup experienced more major modifications that expanded the difference between pro and base versions.
iPhone 14 Features and iPhone 14 specifications
Apple has persisted in providing feature parity across its product lines. Therefore, the larger iPhone 14 Plus is not differentiated from the standard iPhone 14 by characteristics other than its larger screen and longer battery life.
It’s worth noting that the current generation of iPhones does not include a smaller-screened “mini” model. Supposedly owing to low demand, Apple discontinued the iPhone with a 5.4-inch screen in favor of a larger 6.7-inch model.
Design
Regarding iPhone 14 full specifications, the design role is the best part. The iPhone 14, which replaces the iPhone 13, is aesthetically quite similar to the iPhone 13. Similarities include a notch, metal frame, and camera array on the diagonal at the back. There are 460 pixels per inch (PPI) on the 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR screen.
New for 2018, the larger iPhone 14 Plus has the same design as its smaller sibling, right down to the identically sized camera hump. It has a Super Retina XDR screen that’s 6.7 inches in size and can reach 458 pixels per inch in resolution. While it seems like a professional model, it lacks ProMotion.
Displays have High Dynamic Range (HDR), True Tone (TT), and the P3 color gamut, just like the iPhone 13. In typical operation, the OLED can produce 800 nits of brightness and has a contrast ratio of 2 million to one.
The U.S. variants lack a SIM card slot. Apple supports e-SIM, liberating customers from physical SIM cards.
Materials and camera aside, the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max are strikingly similar. They have the exact same-sized True Tone OLED screen that’s protected by a ceramic ‘shield’ and a display that is HDR10 ready and compatible with Dolby Vision.
Cameras
Previously known as the Wide Camera, Apple renamed it the Main Camera and upgraded it to a 12MP sensor with an f/1.5 aperture. This allows for quicker performance in low light and better image quality. Apple claims a 49% boost in visibility.
No mention of updating the Ultra Wide Camera or adding macro photography to non-pro phones. Apple has to implement focusing for the Ultra Wide Camera for this to be a viable option.
The front-facing camera now has autofocus and a larger f/1.9 aperture for better selfies. The selfie camera improves in quality and speed when used in conjunction with the depth sensors employed by Face ID.
The advancement of the processor also allows for 4K recording in Cinematic Mode. Users can use the enhanced camera performance at either 30 or 24 frames per second.
Emergency SOS via satellite
Newer iPhones don’t require a massive antenna module thanks to Apple’s development of specialized antennas and electronics that establish a connection with satellites thousands of miles above Earth’s surface. The use of this system should be considered an emergency measure only.
A user can activate Emergency SOS via satellite to send a distress signal whenever they view the sky or are under relatively light cover. The gadget will guide the user via a series of guided prompts to keep conversations brief but informative.
A user interface on the screen will indicate the optimal angle at which to hold the iPhone to maximize reception from a satellite. Transmission times for such messages range from about 15 seconds to several minutes.
Uses beyond emergencies are possible with this. Using a satellite signal, an iPhone can report the user’s location to friends and family back at home in the city.
Ports and battery life
Despite reports of a USB-C port in the “iPhone 15” in 2023, Apple has decided to keep the Lightning port on future iPhone models. Despite widespread speculation that Apple might go to a 30W fast charging speed, the company has stuck with the 20W standard.
An enhanced battery life, according to Apple, gives the 6.1-inch iPhone 20 hours of use time. For up to 26 hours of use, the iPhone 14 Plus is a viable option.
Both of these versions are fast-charge compatible, with the official maximum power being 20W. The iPhone may be charged to 50% capacity in around 30 minutes when using a 20W charger.
As with prior models, MagSafe charging accessories are fully compatible.
Processor, biometrics, wireless
Apple has only included the newer A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14 Pro models. Thus, the iPhone 14 has to do with the A15 Bionic. This is the processor found in the iPhone 13 Pro, not the iPhone 13.
It has a 5-core graphics processing unit, which allows for faster processing in particular programs.

The iPhone 13’s notch houses Face ID.
In iOS 16, however, consumers can unlock their iPhone 14 in either portrait or landscape mode.
The iPhone 14 series did not get any improvements to its WiFi, 5G, or U1 components. But Apple does add the more recent Bluetooth 5.3 standard. Even though the AirPods Pro 2 is equipped with the newer Bluetooth 5.3 protocol, the advantages of this upgrade are not explained.
Previous rumors
The iPhone 14 rumor mill was operational from the get-go. Jon Prosser leaked a photo of the iPhone of 2022 just days before Apple unveiled the iPhone 13 family.
The official announcement, however, was nothing like this illustration. Too many breakthroughs in technology would have to occur before that could happen.
Based on the purported design, the camera bump has been eliminated, a single camera cutout has replaced the notch, and the device’s sides are reminiscent of the iPhone 4.
Realistic speculations began spreading after this render went viral for a couple of weeks. Apple’s next smartphone would look and function similarly to the iPhone 13, including the notch and A13 processor.
Although it was widely reported that Apple would be ditching the mini in favor of a “Max” or “Plus” model with a 6.7-inch screen, there were few specifics about the upcoming revisions to the entry-level devices.
Apple’s flagship features include enhanced cameras, satellite connectivity, and accident detection. A USB-C connector is rumored to be one of the “iPhone 15’s” other significant improvements. However, this has to be seen.

Ultimately, it probably doesn’t matter if the new iPhone is smarter than a phone. All that matters is if it’s better than the iPhone series that came before it, and in a way, it was.
The new features are great, and they move Apple into an area they haven’t ventured too often in the past: artificial intelligence.
