Immobility has many causes. You may have difficulty walking after surgery, an injury, or if you are dealing with arthritis. You may be reluctant to use a mobility device because you don’t want to feel old. And while this is a little understandable, there is nothing wrong with seeking help. Below, you will see four of the most popular types of mobility devices.
Canes
Perhaps the most well-known mobility device, a cane, is used to help you get around. There are three different canes: standard, offset, and tripod. A standard cane has a curved or T-shaped handle and can help you with your balance. An offset cane has a flat grip and is great for people who have a weak grip or need to put a lot of weight on it. A tripod cane has a sturdy base, but it will slow you down. If your leg needs to heal, a tripod cane can help take the weight off your legs.
Crutches
If you have ever broken your leg, you have used a pair of crutches. Crutches take the weight and pressure off your legs and put it on your upper body, allowing your leg time to heal. They are more supportive than canes, but you should have them fitted for your height and body. To use crutches on different surfaces, you need training.
Mobility Scooter
Mobility scooters are ideal for people who can’t walk long distances for an extended period. These scooters work well on many surfaces. You can use them in the grocery store or out on the sidewalk. There are even scooters you can use to go hiking. They come in different models and sizes. A small one attaches to your car, while a large scooter can navigate unfamiliar terrain like hills.
Walker
Walkers give you more support than canes and crutches, but they will change your gait. Your gait is a distinct way that you walk. Walkers have legs and wheels, and you can use them on most surfaces. Some walkers have seats so you can sit when you become winded. To use a walker correctly, you need training and help to find the right fit.
If you find moving around troublesome, you may need a mobility device. Whether you choose a cane or crutches, you will need to make some changes in your home. Make sure you remove any rugs or things on the floor that will cause you to stumble.
